 The Stage of Returning to the Essent ial Technique (본연의 수로 되돌아가는 단계)

[English] Bansubon (返手本), the eighth stage of the Samwonbon ser ies, represents a return to the essent ial nature of technique after progressing through the pr inciples, ski l ls, strategies, and pract ical appl icat ions of Gongkwon Yusul . The name Bansubon is der ived from the Hanja Ban (返), meaning “to return” or “ to turn back” ; Su (手), meaning “hand,” “ technique,” or “method”; and Bon (本), meaning “foundat ion, ” “or igin, ” or “root .”

Together , Bansubon represents “The Stage of Returning to the Essent ial Technique.”

Bui lding upon Jonyongbon, where technique develops pract ical funct ion and appl icat ion, pract i t ioners now return to the fundamental nature of movement . This return does not mean going backward. It represents a deeper stage of understanding in which complex techniques are ref ined into movements that are simpler , more natural , and more eff icient .

At this stage, ci rcular movement , rotat ional force, and centr i fugal force become important elements in creat ing cont inuous and eff icient mot ion. Pract i t ioners learn to reduce unnecessary strength and excessive movement , al low ing techniques to emerge natural ly according to t im ing, balance, di rect ion, and the f low of force.

Through Bansubon, techniques that once requi red conscious thought and del iberate execut ion gradual ly become more natural and inst inct ive. Complexi ty gives way to simpl ici ty, and learned techniques begin to return to thei r essent ial form .

Bansubon therefore represents an important transi t ion in the Samwonbon journey. By returning to the essent ial nature of technique, pract i t ioners prepare themselves to move beyond technique i tsel f and enter the deeper stages that fol low .

[한국어] 본연의 수로 되돌아가는 단계 삼원본의 여덟 번째 단계인 반수본(返手本)은 공권유술의 원리와 기술, 책략과 실전적 쓰임을 단계적으로 익힌 후 다시 기술의 본질로 되돌아가는 과정입니다. 반수본이라는 명칭은 ‘돌아가다, 되돌리다’를 뜻하는 돌이킬 반(返), ‘손, 기술, 방법’을 뜻하는 손 수(手), 그리고 ‘근본, 기원, 뿌리’를 의미하는 본(本)에서 유래합니다.

이러한 의미를 종합하면 반수본은 “본연의 수로 되돌아가는 단계”를 의미합니다.

존용본에서 기술이 실질적인 쓰임을 갖추었다면, 반수본에서는 다시 움직임의 근본적인 본질로 돌아갑니다. 여기서 ‘되돌아간다’는 것은 이전 단계로 후퇴한다는 의미가 아닙니다. 복잡했던 기술이 더욱 깊은 이해를 통해 단순하고 자연스러우며 효율적인 움직임으로 정제되는 과정을 의미합니다.

이 단계에서는 원운동, 회전력, 원심력이 연속적이고 효율적인 움직임을 만들어내는 중요한 요소가 됩니다. 수련자는 불필요한 힘과 과도한 동작을 줄이고, 타이밍, 균형, 방향, 힘의 흐름에 따라 기술이 자연스럽게 발현되도록 수련합니다.

반수본을 통해 의식적으로 생각하고 수행해야 했던 기술은 점차 자연스럽고 본능적인 움직임으로 발전합니다. 복잡함은 단순함으로 정제되고, 배운 기술은 다시 본연의 형태로 돌아가기 시작합니다.

따라서 반수본은 삼원본의 여정에서 중요한 전환점입니다. 기술의 본질로 되돌아가는 과정을 통해 수련자는 기술 그 자체를 넘어, 이후에 이어지는 더욱 깊은 단계로 나아갈 준비를 하게 됩니다
