What is Gongkwon Yusul?
Gongkwon Yusul is a modern Korean martial art founded in 1996 by Grandmaster Jun Kang in the Republic of Korea.
This system was forged through decades of research, training, and rigorous analysis of real-world combat scenarios. It seamlessly integrates striking, takedowns, joint locks, throws, submissions, and ground fighting into a single, complete martial arts system.
Unlike many traditional martial arts that train punches, kicks, throws, and grappling in isolation, Gongkwon Yusul focuses profoundly on fluidly connecting combat across all ranges.
Practitioners learn to master movements that flow naturally: from striking to the clinch, from the clinch to the takedown, from the takedown to submission, and from standing combat down to total ground control.
The Core Essence: Understanding the Flow
The purpose of Gongkwon Yusul is not to merely memorize a vast array of techniques. It is to deeply understand movement, timing, distance, structure, and flow.
While preserving the respect, philosophy, training methodologies, and belt-ranking (Dan) systems of traditional Korean martial arts, Gongkwon Yusul simultaneously embodies the absolute practicality of modern combat systems.
It has been influenced by traditional Korean martial arts, Hapkido, Yusul, Judo, Kickboxing, and modern grappling systems—yet it is far more than a mere hybrid of different styles. It is a fully unified, standalone system engineered entirely around practical, real-world application.
