Master & Disciple
The True Path of Connection in Gongkwon Yusul
In today’s martial arts landscape, the sacred relationship between a Master and a Disciple is frequently misunderstood and reduced to a mere commercial transaction between an instructor and a customer.
However, these two concepts belong to entirely different dimensions.
While a typical student-instructor relationship is formed within a structured public system to exchange knowledge for a fee, the bond between a Master and a Disciple transcends any formal structure—it is a profound, lifelong connection.
A general trainee in Gongkwon Yusul follows a structured curriculum, learning high-level techniques to build a solid foundation and claim ownership of their own life.
On the other hand, a Disciple who has gone through Baesashik (The Sacred Disciple Induction Ceremony) steps into an extraordinary bond of destiny, known as Saje-yeon (사제연).
A disciple does not merely replicate physical movements. They seek the ultimate essence of the art, absorbing Grandmaster Kang Jun’s deep martial philosophy and character.
In doing so, they join an elite lineage, inheriting, protecting, and propagating the exclusive, master-level technical system of Gongkwon Yusul.
This unique and sacred bond can never be forged through mechanical systems, automated registration, or commercial convenience.
Mirroring the historic tradition of Korea's legendary Baduk masters, Cho Hun-hyun and Lee Chang-ho, this path begins only when a trainee sincerely requests to become a disciple directly to Grandmaster Kang Jun, and the Grandmaster grants permission through strict discernment.
Once their hearts and minds align, they partake in a symbolic, traditional ceremony—sharing tea or wine and verifying technical execution—to be officially recognized.
Even for those training through our online platform, this rigorous and noble process of direct communication, mutual resonance, and personal permission remains absolute.
Reflecting on over 30 years of leadership and teaching, we refuse to dilute our standards for superficial marketing. We choose instead to walk the path toward the pinnacle of martial arts alongside true disciples who have proven their dedication.
