Key Focus: The harmony of Y in and Yang, kicking distance, t im ing, balance, cont inuous offense and defense, and the pr inciple of Ganhap.
Matdaegi Joksul appl ies the pr inciple of harmony between Y in and Yang to the kicking techniques of Gongkwon Yusul . One pract i t ionerโs movement meets the other pract i t ionerโs corresponding movement , creat ing a cont inuous exchange in which attack and defense exist in relat ion to one another.
Matdaegi Joksul consists of 10 dist inct kicking sequences. Together , these 10 Joksul techniques encompass near ly al l of the fundamental kicking methods used in pract ical combat . By training them systemat ical ly, pract i t ioners exper ience a broad range of kicking trajector ies, distances, angles, targets, and methods of appl icat ion w i thin a structured partner-training system.
When pract iced alone, a kicking movement may appear to be simply a sequence of mot ions. When two pract i t ioners face each other and perform the corresponding movements together , however , the purpose of each technique becomes clear . One pract i t ionerโs kick becomes the reason for the other pract i t ionerโs defense, and that defense natural ly creates the opportuni ty for the next attack or counterattack.
Through this process, pract i t ioners come to understand not only how to perform a kick, but why i t is used, from what distance i t becomes effect ive, and how i t connects to the movement that fol lows.
Matdaegi Joksul also develops a natural understanding of Ganhap (้ๅ) , the pr inciple of proper distance and spat ial relat ionship between pract i t ioners. K icking requi res a di fferent sense of distance from hand techniques, throws, and joint locks. Through cont inuous partner pract ice, pract i t ioners learn to recognize the distance at which a kick becomes effect ive and how that distance changes as the exchange develops.
Low , m iddle, and high kicks are pract iced not merely as separate techniques, but as parts of a cont inuous relat ionship between distance, t im ing, balance, di rect ion, and the movement of the partner .
Because Gongkwon Yusul connects kicking, hand techniques, throws, and joint locks w i thin the same cont inuous exchange, pract i t ioners gradual ly develop the abi l i ty to sense when kicking distance changes into str iking, throw ing, or joint- locking distance. In this way, Ganhap becomes something that is fel t and understood through the body rather than calculated intel lectual ly.
Matdaegi Joksul therefore develops more than kicking power and f lexibi l i ty. Through the harmony of Y in and Yang and the pr inciple of Ganhap, pract i t ioners learn to understand the purpose of each kick and discover how distance, t im ing, offense, and defense come together w i thin the cont inuous f low of Gongkwon Yusul .
